Description
Crispy chilli beef is a spicy Chinese-style stir fry with crunchy fried beef strips tossed in a sweet chili sauce with garlic and ginger.
Ingredients
1 lb beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 egg
1/4 cup water
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
Salt and pepper to taste
Vegetable oil for frying
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
1 tablespoon chili sauce
2 teaspoons sugar
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 tablespoon minced ginger
1/2 onion, sliced
1 bell pepper, sliced
1–2 red chilies, sliced
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1 tablespoon chopped green onions
Instructions
1. Slice beef thinly against the grain into strips.
2. Mix cornstarch, flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper.
3. Add egg and water and whisk to form a smooth batter.
4. Heat oil and fry battered beef strips 3–4 minutes until crispy.
5. Drain beef on paper towels.
6. Heat sesame oil in a wok and sauté garlic and ginger.
7. Add onion and bell pepper and stir fry 2 minutes.
8. Add soy sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, chili sauce, and sugar.
9. Simmer sauce for 2 minutes.
10. Add crispy beef and toss well.
11. Cook another 2 minutes until coated.
12. Garnish with chilies and green onions and serve.
Notes
Slice beef thinly against the grain for tenderness.
Fry beef in batches to keep it crispy.
Adjust chili sauce for desired spice level.
