Description
This country sausage gravy recipe is creamy, rich, and easy to make from scratch with breakfast sausage, flour, butter, and whole milk. Serve it over warm biscuits for a classic Southern breakfast.
Ingredients
1 pound pork breakfast sausage
3 tablespoons butter, only if needed
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
3 cups whole milk
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
Biscuits for serving
Instructions
1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the pork breakfast sausage until brown and crumbly.
2. Check the skillet for fat. Add butter only if needed so you have about 3 tablespoons total fat in the pan.
3. Sprinkle the flour over the sausage, stir well, and cook for several minutes until the flour absorbs the fat and turns lightly golden.
4. Slowly pour in the whole milk while stirring.
5. Continue cooking over medium heat, stirring often, until the gravy thickens, about 5 to 10 minutes.
6. Season with black pepper to taste and serve hot over biscuits.
Notes
Use mild or spicy breakfast sausage depending on your flavor preference.
If the gravy thickens too much, stir in a splash of milk before serving.
Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat gently on the stove.
Homemade biscuits make this recipe even better.
