Description
This caramel apple upside-down cake features tender apples baked in rich caramel and topped with a soft cinnamon-spiced cake. Perfect for fall gatherings, holidays, and cozy family desserts.
Ingredients
3 tbsp unsalted butter
½ cup brown sugar
2–3 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1½ cups all-purpose flour
1½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp nutmeg
½ cup unsalted butter softened
½ cup brown sugar
¼ cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
½ cup sour cream or plain yogurt
¼ cup milk
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
2. Melt butter and brown sugar in a saucepan until smooth and bubbly then pour into the pan.
3. Arrange sliced apples evenly over the caramel.
4. Whisk flour baking powder baking soda salt cinnamon and nutmeg in a bowl.
5. Cream butter and sugars until fluffy then add eggs and vanilla.
6. Mix in sour cream and milk then fold in dry ingredients.
7. Spread batter evenly over the apples.
8. Bake for 40–45 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
9. Cool for 10–15 minutes then invert onto a serving plate.
Notes
Use firm apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith for best results.
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Store covered for up to 4 days in the refrigerator.
