Description
Best Amish White Bread is a soft, fluffy homemade loaf made with simple pantry ingredients. Perfect for sandwiches, toast, or freezing for later.
Ingredients
1 cup water (110°F)
1 pinch powdered ginger (optional)
1 cup milk (110°F)
2/3 cup sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 cup vegetable oil or melted butter
5 1/2 cups bread flour
2 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing)
Instructions
1. Dissolve sugar in warm water and milk.
2. Whisk in yeast and ginger. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
3. Stir in 1 cup flour.
4. Add salt and oil.
5. Gradually mix in remaining flour until dough pulls away from bowl.
6. Knead by machine for 5 minutes or by hand for 10 minutes until smooth.
7. Place dough in oiled bowl and let rise 1 hour until doubled.
8. Punch down dough and divide into two loaves.
9. Place in greased 9×5-inch pans and brush with melted butter.
10. Let rise 30 minutes.
11. Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes until internal temp reaches 190°F.
12. Brush tops with butter and cover with towel for soft crust.
Notes
Use fresh yeast for best rise.
Do not overheat liquids above 115°F.
For dairy-free version use plant milk and coconut oil.
Freeze sliced bread for up to 3 months.
